T.R. Knight, cast member of the award-winning television series Grey’s Anatomy, recently celebrated his 34th birthday on March 26. And as a friendly gesture, costar Katherine Heigl surprised him with a puppy as a birthday gift.

Ebony, the name of the puppy, was recovered from an animal shelter in Lincoln, Nebraska, in which Heigl and her family helps out. In fact, Heigl’s father had already given more than 200 dogs a new home. The six months old puppy is actually a mixed breed that looks a lot like a Labrador.

It seems like the two Grey’s Anatomy stars are getting along just fine. Off cam, they appear to have a solid friendship, evident in Heigl’s support for the aggrieved T.R. Knight when Grey’s Anatomy cast member Isaiah Washington used an anti-gay slur against him. After the much-rumored slur, Washington denied the issue. He said, "I never called T.R. a faggot. It never happened." In response to Washington’s slur and denial, Heigl asserted, "I’

m not okay with it. I'm going to be really honest right now. He [Isaiah Washington] needs to just not speak in public. Period." She also announced that Knight is her best friend and that she is willing to do every thing in her power to take down anyone who would hurt the feelings of Knight. Shortly after the incident, Washington apologized. He said, "I sincerely regret my actions and the unfortunate use of words during the recent incident on-set."

On cam, Heigl and Knight are noticeably teaming up in a romantic fashion.

Although it’s a bit odd to see them pair up, it’s actually entertaining to see them transcend the off cam chemistry to an on screen love affair.
